Truck Bed Rack Height

Height is the variable most buyers underestimate the first time and obsess over the second time.

For utility and kayak racks, height is determined by the need to carry long material over the cab. The CXR Utility Max height range is dependent on your specific truck model and is selected at the time of ordering. The CXR Rack Height Selection Guide has cab height references for every major truck platform.

For overland racks, height determines how the rooftop tent sits relative to the cab. If you want your tent flush with the top of the cab, subtract the closed height of your tent from your cab height. The result is the rack height to order. If you want the tent above the cab, you want a rack in the 22 to 28-inch range depending on your specific truck. If you want a low-profile setup for garage clearance or reduced wind resistance, the 9.5 to 12-inch range is the right starting point.

The CXR Fortress can be ordered to any height from 9.5 to 28 inches. The VRS is available in 12-inch, 18-inch, and 22-inch configurations. The PRO-XE runs in a low-profile form designed to sit close to the bed. No KB Voodoo crossbar system is tall enough to provide clearance above the cab. The VRS Hi-Rise positions crossbars 6 inches above the bed rails, not above the cab.

Truck Bed Rack Length

The truck bed rack you choose should cover the full length of your truck bed. This is the differentiator most buyers do not notice in product photos but immediately feel when they see a rooftop tent or a load of lumber hanging unsupported off the end of a short rack.

Most competitor racks fall approximately one foot short of the end of the truck bed because the internal design of the truck bed limits where attachment brackets can be placed. KB Voodoo solves this with the Voodoo Rail System (VRS) and the Base Rail System (BRS), foundational rail systems that span the full length of the bed and allow attachment brackets to be positioned anywhere along that span. The result is a full length truck bed rack that covers the entire bed rather than stopping short.

Materials of Construction

Generally speaking, steel bed racks can be a little bit stronger and a little less expensive, but steel is always susceptible to corrosion. Bed racks will see abuse during their lifetime, any damage that removes the finish can eventually become a spot where rust will begin. If your preference is a steel bed rack, it is important to use touch up paint on any areas of damage to protect the finish.

Aluminum has a very high strength-to-weight ratio, and it can never rust. The lighter weight of an aluminum bed rack also makes installation and removal from your truck much easier, and the lower weight also will reduce the amount of suspension sag.

Load Rating

Load rating is the variable that matters most when the rack is actually carrying weight and matters least when buyers are shopping on price alone. Do not make that mistake.

Truck bed rack load ratings come in two forms. Dynamic rating is what the rack can safely carry while the truck is in motion. Static rating is what it holds at rest. Both matter. A rack with a high static rating and a low dynamic rating holds weight well when parked but may flex or stress at highway speed. Always check both numbers.

Most two-person hard shell rooftop tents weigh between 120 and 180 lbs. Lumber, ladders, and pipe on a working truck can easily approach 400 to 600 lbs depending on the load. The rack needs to handle those numbers in motion, not just at rest.

Tonneau Cover Compatibility

Running a tonneau cover and a truck bed rack on the same truck is not only possible, it is how most KB Voodoo customers run their trucks. The rack attaches to the truck bed independently. The cover stays on beneath the rack. Gear stored in the bed stays dry and secure under the cover while cargo rides above on the rack.

What changes is whether the cover can operate normally with the rack in place. Retractable covers still function with a rack installed. Most roll-up covers will fully function. Most folding covers cannot open with the rack in place, though all KB Voodoo racks remove quickly in four bolts when full bed access is needed.
