CXR Utility Max: The American-Made Utility Truck Bed Rack

Most truck bed racks are designed for the overlanding market. They look sharp on a Tacoma parked at a trailhead. They are not designed for a contractor who needs to load ladders at the supply house before sunrise and have them on the jobsite by 7 AM.

KB Voodoo was founded in 2016 in Western New York to build truck bed rack systems that solve real problems for real working trucks. The CXR Utility Max is that product. It is a purpose-engineered, full bed-length aluminum utility truck bed rack and ladder rack with a 26-inch over-cab extension, built for contractors and tradespeople who need to carry ladders, lumber, pipe, kayaks, and heavy gear above the bed. It installs without drilling a single hole, and it ships to all 50 states and Canada.

KB Voodoo's CXR Utility Max carries 600 lbs dynamic and 1,200 lbs static, ships in 5 to 7 business days, and mounts to your truck without drilling. View the 4-Pack here or view the 6-Pack here.

What Makes the CXR Utility Max Different from a Standard Overland Rack

The distinction matters before you spend a dollar. Overland-style bed racks are built around gear organization, roof top tent mounting, and overlanding lifestyle use cases. That is a legitimate product category with a large audience. It is not the right tool if what you actually need to carry is ladders, lumber, or pipe on a working truck every day.

The CXR Utility Max is rated for exactly those loads and then some. Ladders, lumber, pipe, kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, surfboards. And the 26-inch over-cab extension means you are getting the functional equivalent of a roof rack and a bed rack in one system. Material that extends beyond the bed has somewhere to go. That is what separates a real utility rack from an overland rack with a work-truck paint job.

If your primary use case is mounting a roof top tent or running cargo boxes and skis, KB Voodoo has overland-style bed racks and crossbar systems built for those applications. The product line comparison page maps every use case to the right system if you are still deciding.

Load Ratings, Configurations, and What They Mean on a Work Truck

The CXR Utility Max carries 600 lbs dynamic and 1,200 lbs static, evenly distributed across the rack. Both ratings matter. Dynamic is what the rack safely carries while the truck is in motion. Static is what it holds at rest, staged on a jobsite or parked with a full load. At 600 lbs dynamic, the CXR Utility Max is engineered for the loads a working truck actually carries, not the lighter load profiles of a crossbar system or a weekend overland setup.

The CXR Utility Max is available in two configurations. The 4-Pack (four legs) is the more affordable, lighter-weight option. The 6-Pack (six legs) delivers maximum strength and additional accessory mounting points. Both are full aluminum construction with black stainless steel hardware and bronze-colored strengthening plates. Both carry the same 600 lb dynamic and 1,200 lb static rating. The choice between them comes down to budget, load type, and how many attachment points you need for accessories.

The over-cab extension is 26 inches long on both configurations. Optional deck panels are available to add a full load surface to the extension. An optional wind fairing is also available. Molle panels are also an available option.

Height range is dependent on your specific truck model and is selected at time of ordering. If you need a reference point before ordering, the CXR Rack Height Selection Guide lists cab heights for every major truck platform.

Tonneau Cover Compatibility

The CXR Utility Max includes built-in tonneau cover compatibility with no adapters needed. The rack attaches to the truck bed independently of the cover. The cover stays on the truck. Your gear stays dry and secure underneath.

What changes is whether the cover can operate normally with the rack installed. Retractable covers will still function normally. Most roll-up covers will fully function. Most folding covers cannot open with the rack in place, though the rack removes when full bed access is needed.

The CXR Utility Max can also be adapted for bed covers with built-in integrated tracks. Contact KB Voodoo directly at support@kbvoodoo.com and they will walk you through the specifics for your cover.

For tonneau cover width measurements by truck make and model, the CXR Tonneau Fitment Guide has the exact inside width measurements you need to confirm compatibility before ordering. The VRS Tonneau Fitment Guide is also available if you are comparing fitment across the product line.

How It Installs, and How It Comes Off

Every KB Voodoo rack, including the CXR Utility Max, attaches to your truck using integrated attachment brackets that secure the system using no-drill bed attachment clips that clamp to the underside of the bed lip. Nothing penetrates the bed. There is no drilling, no permanent modification, and no damage to your truck. On Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra, and Jeep Gladiator trucks equipped with factory accessory rails, the uprights bolt directly to those rails for an even cleaner install.

When you need full bed access, the rack removes in four bolts and lifts straight off. That removability matters on a work truck where the load changes from day to day. One day you are hauling ladders and lumber. The next you need the full bed for equipment. The CXR Utility Max accommodates both without any permanent commitment to either.

If you have questions about fitment for your specific truck before ordering, the KB Voodoo team responds quickly. Contact them here or email support@kbvoodoo.com directly.

Who the CXR Utility Max Is Actually Built For

Contractors who need a ladder rack for their truck that can also handle lumber, pipe, and sheet goods without switching systems. Electricians running conduit who need secure, stable overhead carrying without racks that shift at highway speed. Landscapers, HVAC technicians, plumbers, and general tradespeople who stage material at job sites and need real load capacity to match. Water sports enthusiasts who want to carry kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards without a dedicated single-purpose rack. Anyone who has ever stared at a truck bed full of material and thought there has to be a better way to get this from point A to point B.

The CXR Utility Max is not the right choice for gear organization or cargo box use. For those applications, the overland-style bed rack lineup or the crossbar systems page is the right starting point. If you are not sure which product fits your situation, the product line comparison makes the decision straightforward.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I haul with the KB Voodoo CXR Utility Max truck bed rack?
The CXR Utility Max is designed for ladders, lumber, pipe, kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, and surfboards. The 26-inch over-cab extension handles material that extends beyond the truck bed. These are load categories that require the structural rating and full-length design of a dedicated utility rack. Crossbar systems and overland racks are not engineered for these loads.

Does the CXR Utility Max require drilling into the truck bed?
No. The CXR Utility Max attaches using integrated attachment brackets and no-drill bed attachment clips that clamp to the underside of the bed lip. Nothing penetrates the bed. On Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra, and Jeep Gladiator trucks with factory accessory rails, the uprights bolt directly to those rails.

What is the difference between the 4-Pack and 6-Pack CXR Utility Max?
The 4-Pack (four legs) is the more affordable, lighter-weight configuration. The 6-Pack (six legs) delivers maximum strength and additional accessory mounting points. Both carry the same 600 lb dynamic and 1,200 lb static load rating and include the 26-inch over-cab extension. The choice comes down to budget and how many attachment points you need.

Can I keep my tonneau cover on the truck with the CXR Utility Max installed?
Yes. The CXR Utility Max includes built-in tonneau cover compatibility with no adapters needed. The rack attaches to the truck independently and the cover stays on. Retractable covers still function normally. Most roll-up covers fully function. Most folding covers cannot open with the rack installed, though the rack removes when full bed access is needed.
