Load Ratings: What the Numbers Actually Mean for Your Tent

Every conversation about truck bed racks for rooftop tents should start here. Most two-person hard shell RTTs weigh between 120 and 180 lbs. Some of the larger or heavier-duty models push closer to 200 lbs. The rack carries that weight in two distinct conditions: dynamic, meaning the tent is closed and secured while you are driving, and static, meaning the tent is deployed and at rest on a parked truck.

Both ratings matter. A rack with a high static rating but a low dynamic rating is telling you it holds weight well when nothing is moving but may flex or stress under highway driving loads. KB Voodoo publishes both ratings across all three systems.

The full VRS overland rack carries 600 lbs dynamic and 1,200 lbs static in steel, and 500 lbs dynamic and 1,100 lbs static in aluminum. The VRS Hi-Rise crossbar set, which is the VRS crossbar configuration specifically designed for rooftop tent mounting, carries 400 lbs dynamic and 800 lbs static for a full set. The Hi-Rise positions crossbars 6 inches above the bed rails. That 6 inches is designed to provide clearance beneath the tent bars for gear storage, not to put the tent above cab height. Keep that distinction in mind.

Height Selection: Getting Your RTT Where You Want It

Height is the decision most first-time buyers underestimate and most experienced overland builders obsess over. It determines how the tent sits in relation to the cab, how easily the tent opens and deploys, and whether you pick up wind drag at highway speed.

The CXR Fortress can be ordered to any height from 9.5 inches to 28 inches. The VRS comes in 6-inch, 12-inch, 18-inch, and 22-inch configurations. The PRO-XE runs in a low-profile form closer to the bed. Each suits a different goal.

KB Voodoo publishes cab height references for every major truck platform in the CXR Rack Height Selection Guide. Some reference points from that guide: the Toyota Tacoma cab measures approximately 21 inches, or 22 inches to the top of the shark fin antenna. The Ford F-150 is approximately 23 inches, 24 to the shark fin. The Jeep Gladiator is approximately 23 inches with no fin. The Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 are both approximately 23 inches with no fin. The RAM 1500 and 2500 are also approximately 23 inches.

If you want your tent to sit flush with the top of your cab, the math is straightforward. Subtract the closed height of your tent from the cab height. The result is the rack height to order. If your Tacoma cab is 21 inches and your tent folds down to 8 inches, you are ordering a 13-inch rack to get flush fitment. One thing worth stating plainly: no KB Voodoo crossbar system is tall enough to provide clearance above the cab. The VRS Hi-Rise positions crossbars 6 inches above the bed rails, which is a low-profile configuration, not a cab-height clearance play. Full overland racks in the 22 to 28-inch range on the CXR Fortress can approach or match cab height on most platforms, but crossbars alone do not achieve that. If someone is marketing a crossbar system as clearing over the cab, look carefully at what they are actually measuring.

Why Full Bed Length Matters More Than Most People Realize

This is the spec most buyers do not think about until they are trying to deploy a tent that extends past the end of the rack. A 63-inch long tent on a 48-inch long rack leaves a significant portion of the tent unsupported at both ends. The platform flexes more, the weight distribution is uneven, and the tent is less stable at speed and while occupied with campers.

KB Voodoo's CXR Fortress is built around the Base Rail System (BRS), a full bed-length aluminum foundation that spans the complete length of the truck bed. CXR racks are designed 2 inches shorter than the bed length to allow for adjustment during installation, and are ordered in half-foot increments from 4.5 feet to 6.5 feet. The BRS allows the attachment brackets to be positioned anywhere along the length of the bed, which is what enables full coverage without being constrained to the limited attachment zones that force competitors to build racks significantly shorter than the bed.

For RTT use, a full-length rack gives the tent the maximum possible floor support, the cleanest weight distribution across the full rack span, and the most stable platform whether you are parked or moving. The VRS is available in 58-inch and 70-inch lengths and also provides solid RTT support within those dimensions. Running a Rooftop Tent and a Tonneau Cover on the Same Truck

This is the question the KB Voodoo team hears constantly, and the answer is yes. A rooftop tent and a tonneau cover can absolutely coexist on the same truck. The rack attaches to the truck independently. The cover stays on the bed beneath the rack. Gear stays dry and secure underneath the cover. The tent mounts to the rack above. You do not have to choose.

What changes is whether the tonneau cover can operate normally with the rack in place. Retractable covers will still function with a rack installed. Most roll-up covers will fully function. Most folding covers cannot open with the rack in place, though the rack removes in four bolts when full bed access is needed.

Which KB Voodoo System Fits Your RTT Setup

The answer comes down to how far you want to build out beyond just mounting the tent.

The VRS is the premium modular system and the one to choose if building out over time is part of the plan. It is built on a CNC laser cut rail system with up to 9 crossbars mountable per Voodoo Rail. The VRS crossbar setup expands into a full VRS overland rack without replacing the foundational rail components. That upgrade path is a genuine selling point if you want to start with crossbars and grow the system as your needs evolve. VRS-exclusive accessories include the Gear Locker storage chest, Hi Lift Jack Brackets, and Awning Mounts. The VRS Hi-Rise crossbar configuration positions the crossbars 6 inches above the bed rails and is the natural starting point for RTT mounting within the VRS line.

The CXR Fortress is the full-length overland bed rack and the highest-capability RTT platform in the KB Voodoo lineup. Available in 4-Pack (four legs) and 6-Pack (six legs) configurations from 9.5 inches to 28 inches tall, the CXR gives you the most height range, the most base coverage, and the most accessory options. The 6-Pack (six legs) configuration at a minimum rack height of 17 inches enables the Cargo Access Door, which lets you reach gear from the side of the rack without removing the tent or disturbing the tonneau cover. Available in 5-inch and 8-inch configurations, the PRO-XE fits all trucks, requires no drilling for installation, and carries 300 lbs dynamic and 800 lbs static per set of two bars, which covers every standard production RTT. There is no expansion path on the PRO-XE into a full rack, so if you already know you want a complete overland setup eventually, starting with the VRS makes more sense. Also worth noting: the Lo-Rise version of the PRO-XE sits directly on the truck bed side rails and cannot be used with tonneau covers at all.
